Mobile UI Patterns That Work

We live in a mobile-first world—and for most users, their thumb is the primary navigation tool. Whether they’re scrolling through social media, tapping “buy now,” or swiping to unlock, the design of your mobile UI must work with the thumb, not against it.

1. Ergonomics: Designing for the Natural Reach

Gestures are powerful—but they’re invisible by default, so they must feel natural and be discoverable.

  • Swipes work best for secondary actions (e.g., archiving an email).
  • Pull-to-refresh is now widely recognized, but always provide a visual cue.
  • Avoid placing critical elements where accidental swipes might trigger unwanted actions.

  • Reserve edge swipes for navigation or system actions.
  • Reinforce gestures with small animations or hints the first time users encounter them.
  • Provide alternate methods (buttons or menus) for essential actions to ensure accessibility.
